Multidisciplinary artist investigating borders, microhistories, and subaltern narratives through photography, textiles, and archives.

Yto Barrada works from Tangier, where she founded both the Cinémathèque de Tanger — North Africa's first repertory cinema — and The Mothership, an eco-feminist research center built around a dye garden. The practice began with photographs of the Strait of Gibraltar as a border, a threshold, and the lives shaped by it.

Her work now spans photography, textiles dyed with plants and minerals from her own garden, film, sculpture, and installation. The subjects shift — fossil trades, tourist economies, maternal archives, children's toys — but the method holds: reinterpret the official story, uncover what's been left out, celebrate the strategies of resistance.

She represents France at the 2026 Venice Biennale. Her work is held by the Centre Pompidou, the Guggenheim, and The Met, among others.
