Rineke Dijkstra
Rineke Dijkstra creates large-scale photographic and video portraits, primarily of adolescents, capturing moments of vulnerability and identity formation with subtle contextual detail.
Rineke Dijkstra has, since the early 1990s, developed a distinctive body of photographic and video work that redefines contemporary portraiture. Her large-scale color photographs and videos primarily feature young, often adolescent subjects, captured with minimal contextual detail. This approach emphasizes the subtle exchange between the photographer and the subject, and the dynamic relationship between the viewer and the viewed.
Born in Sittard, The Netherlands, Dijkstra trained at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. Her profound impact on the medium has been recognized with numerous accolades, including the Johannes Vermeer Prize in 2020 and the Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography in 2017, solidifying her status as a leading figure in contemporary art.
Dijkstra’s work has been the subject of major retrospectives at institutions such as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. Her video installation *Night Watching* premiered in the Gallery of Honour of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, in 2019, further demonstrating her nuanced exploration of identity and human experience across diverse mediums.
