Meriem Bennani

Meriem Bennani works between documentary, animation, reality television, and science fiction — a practice she calls magic or a hyperactivity of genre. Her films and immersive installations splice together iPhone videos, found footage, cartoons, and CGI creatures into narratives that resist linearity and reflect the fractured speed of contemporary life.

The work is often rooted in Morocco and the African diaspora, gesturing toward postcolonial power dynamics, gender politics, and censorship. Created in collaboration with family, her films adopt a vernacular style — tender, humorous, and attentive to the spaces between cultures and time.

Her world-building produces a visual language that's singular, restless, and alive to the way we actually move through images now. She lives and works in New York.
