Matt Saunders

Matt Saunders approaches painting as a transitive and time-based medium, pushing the boundaries of traditional artistic categories. His practice is characterized by innovative camera-less photography, multi-screen animation, and unique painting and printmaking processes, all designed to explore the fleeting nature and affective power of images.

Drawing imagery from diverse sources, including avant-garde cinema and found photographs, Saunders creates haunting portraits and landscapes. His analogue methods connect painting, photography, and printmaking to the moving image, referencing film history and fiction to create a distinctive visual language.

Based between New York City, Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he teaches at Harvard University, and Berlin, Germany, Saunders has exhibited widely at institutions such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and Tate Liverpool. His work is held in major collections globally.
