Jack Pierson

Jack Pierson’s expansive practice navigates the emotional landscapes of daily existence, from the intimacy of personal connection to the allure of wanderlust. He moves fluidly between photography, sculpture, installation, painting, and found objects, often juxtaposing the hazy, introspective quality of his photographs with the bold, material presence of his sculptural works.

His signature 'Word Pieces' are constructed from salvaged signage — cinema marquees, road signs, neon letters — evoking a mid-century nostalgia. These found materials are combined with contemporary vernacular, philosophical ideas, or literary quotations, transforming everyday language into a form of concrete poetry that defamiliarizes the familiar.

Pierson's photographic work, often compared to road movie stills, captures atmospheric sea and landscapes imbued with a poignant introspection. He explores the fictional rather than documentary aspects of the medium, even creating fictionalized self-portraits that chart a lifetime without ever depicting the artist himself. Pierson was part of the influential Boston School in the 1980s.
