Barbara Kruger
Barbara Kruger engages viewers with a distinctive visual language, utilizing images, text, and technology to question established power structures and social constructs.
Since the late 1970s, Barbara Kruger has powerfully and directly engaged with viewers through her distinctive visual language. Utilizing images, text, and technology, her work functions as a tool of communication, revealing and questioning established power structures and social constructs.
Kruger rose to prominence in the early 1980s with large-scale black-and-white photo-based images, often framed in red and overlaid with direct address language. She has since adapted her iconic visual approach across a wide variety of formats, from lithographs, screenprints, and digital prints to monumental wall and floor installations, incorporating video and massive LED works.
Her potent visuality and incisive observations on issues of value, gender, marginality, and the construction of consensus remain singularly recognizable and resonant today. Kruger's work continues to be exhibited globally, challenging audiences to critically examine the messages that shape contemporary culture.
