Kevin Beasley
Sculptor working with raw Virginia cotton, resin, and cultural memory — material histories suspended in layered, sonic installations.
Kevin Beasley works with raw Virginia cotton, polyurethane resin, and the charged materials of everyday life — housedresses, T-shirts, shoes, feathers — layering them into dense, sculptural reliefs and installations that hold memory in suspension. The cotton is never neutral; it arrives with the full weight of its agricultural and cultural history.
His sound installations are equally deliberate. Multi-channel recordings, custom speakers, vintage equipment arranged in meticulous spatial configurations — performances by collaborators like Okwui Okpokwasili and Ralph Lemon played back over sixteen-hour loops, the gallery rewired as a listening chamber.
He was born in Lynchburg, Virginia, and maintains a studio in New York. The work is shown internationally, but the practice remains rooted in a specific geography and a specific reckoning with what that ground holds.
