Edmund de Waal
Porcelain installations and the writer's instinct for arrangement, repetition, and silence.
Edmund de Waal makes porcelain. Vessels — pale, thrown, cool to the eye — gathered into vitrines, shelves, long horizontal lines, sometimes hundreds at a time. The work is cumulative and exact, more akin to sentences than to pots.
He also writes. *The Hare with Amber Eyes* is a memoir-as-inventory of family loss across the twentieth century; *un Archivo* and *Letters to Camondo* extend the practice into archives and absences. The two parts of his work share a sensibility — the careful weight of objects, the way silences can be made tangible by what is set beside them.
His studio is in west London. The pots keep arriving in ones and twos and, occasionally, in a hundred-and-twelve.
