Christopher Myers
Artist and writer building mythologies through appliqué tapestries, sculpture, and theater — history read for what's missing.
Christopher Myers works between textiles, sculpture, performance, and film, pulling apart the space between history and mythology. The appliqué tapestries — made with artisans in Luxor from sailcloth, grain sacks, Nigerian wedding lace — carry the histories of movement and migration in their materials.
The work is forensic and speculative in equal measure. One piece maps police violence through abstracted figures and autopsy diagrams; another transforms W.E.B. Du Bois's data visualizations into geometric fabric. His ongoing Vxllrncgnt series imagines flags for nations that have yet to exist.
A playwright and theater designer, Myers has staged work from New York to Kigali. The practice moves across disciplines with a single aim: to speak as many languages as possible, to as many people as possible.
