Ballpoint, charcoal, pastel — long-form drawn fictions of Black aristocracy and counter-history that read like chapters of an unwritten novel.

Toyin Ojih Odutola draws — primarily ballpoint pen, charcoal, and pastel — at a scale and density that pulls drawing into the territory of painting. The figures are Black, the surfaces are exquisitely worked, and the pictures ask to be read like chapters of a novel that is otherwise nowhere written down.

A series called *A Countervailing Theory* imagined a deep-history matriarchal civilization. *To Wander Determined* invented a fictional Nigerian aristocracy. The work is consistently long-form, durational, world-building — closer to literature in ambition than to most contemporary drawing.

She lives and works in New York, shows with Jack Shainman, and her pieces are in the collections of the Whitney, MoMA, and the Tate.
