Takeshi Murata
A pioneer of glitch art, Takeshi Murata crafts hyper-realistic digital animations and sculptures, exploring the process of image-making and the digital afterlife through a distinctive DIY approach.
Takeshi Murata (b. 1974) delves into the digital afterlife of images through a diverse practice encompassing video, animation, data-moshing, and CGI. His work, often influenced by his architect parents, considers the construction of space in both two and three dimensions. Murata is widely recognized as a pioneer of glitch art, a technique he began exploring around 2003 after a serendipitous failed video download.
His artistic journey has since ventured into hyper-realism and computer-simulated imagery, frequently achieved through a distinctive DIY methodology. Lacking access to a Hollywood animation studio, Murata meticulously hones his craft by learning from instructional online videos. The resulting uncanny digital sculptures evoke the aesthetics of online gaming and major animated motion pictures, belying their amateur origins.
A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, Murata's work is held in significant collections including SFMoMA, The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, and The Smithsonian Museum of American Art. He has exhibited internationally, with solo shows at Kunstall Stavanger and Halsey McKay Gallery, and group exhibitions at institutions such as The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles.
