Cory Arcangel
Pioneer of technology-based art — modified video games, internet archaeology, and the afterlife of obsolete systems.
Cory Arcangel treats software, hardware, and digital detritus as raw material. His practice spans modified video games, music composition, performance, and internet interventions — work that places aging technologies in new contexts and watches them breathe differently.
Trained in classical guitar and music technology at Oberlin in the late 1990s, he became known in the mid-2000s for applying archaeological methods to 1980s computer systems. In 2014, he founded Arcangel Surfware, a software and merchandise company stocking the essentials for sustained internet living: T-shirts, bedsheets, iPhone cases.
Born in Buffalo, he lived in New York for fifteen years before relocating to Stavanger. In 2011, he became the youngest artist since Bruce Nauman to hold a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
