Artist measuring light, color, and atmosphere through precise observation — from Turner's paintings to Walden Pond's breeze.

Spencer Finch pursues the most elusive of experiences: the color of a Monument Valley sunset, shadows crossing Emily Dickinson's yard, the precise temperature of moonlight. His installations, sculptures, and works on paper filter perception through nature, history, literature, and a rigorous poetic method.

The work resists definitive truth. Instead, it reinforces the fleeting, temporal quality of observation — what curator Susan Cross describes as his "own version of a theory of relativity." Major commissions include The River That Flows Both Ways on New York's High Line, 700 panes of glass representing water conditions on the Hudson over 700 minutes.

Born in New Haven in 1962, Finch studied at RISD, Hamilton College, and Doshisha University in Kyoto. His work is held by the Guggenheim, the Whitney, the National Gallery, and MoMA Frankfurt, among others. He works from Brooklyn.
