Federico Herrero
Painter of brightly hued organic forms that spill from canvas to wall, rooted in Costa Rica's colliding landscapes.
Federico Herrero paints the collision of nature and culture in Costa Rica — brightly hued organic shapes that jostle, creep along edges, and break free of the frame entirely. His canvases become exercises in seeing; his installations wind into crevices and across walls, turning exhibition spaces into environments.
Color, for Herrero, is an expression of space — the absence and abundance of it, the relationship between them. His practice operates on a nearly atomic scale, dissonant and harmonious at once, infused with play and humor.
He founded Despacio and Cero Uno, two contemporary art spaces in San José that have shaped Central America's artistic voice. His work is held by the Guggenheim, Tate Modern, and Reina Sofía, among others, and he was awarded the Young Artist's Prize at the 49th Venice Biennale.
