Simon Evans and Sarah Lannan
Collaborators building dense text-and-image collages from studio detritus — diagrams, charts, and cosmologies poised between earnestness and irony.
Simon Evans and Sarah Lannan make collages that read like annotated maps of a life lived between hope and melancholy. The surfaces are dense with text, drawing, found paper, and the accumulated debris of the studio — each work a diagram, chart, inventory, or cosmology that refuses to settle into a single mood.
The tone is wry, the hand is tender, and the world they describe swings between two poles: earnest and ironic, pathetic and hopeful. The viewer is asked to move through all of it at once.
They've shown at Palais de Tokyo, MUDAM Luxembourg, the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland, and in biennials in Istanbul and São Paulo. Their work is held in the collections of SFMOMA, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art. They live and work in Brooklyn.
