Painter of suspended, fractured images — bold contours, disappearing forms, and the structure of improvisation.
Rita Ackermann paints from a studio in New York, where she has worked since immigrating from Budapest in 1992. The early paintings — bold contour lines, semi-transparent bodies — positioned her within the city's cultural moment and have held their place in the decades since.
Her method is recursive but anchored by improvisation and formal negation. The paintings are shaped in part by cinema — Godard, Virilio — and structured like montage: images appear, fracture, and vanish. Suspension, not development, is the central gesture.
The work confronts the present quietly, cryptically, and with interior volatility. What remains on the surface is never quite stable.
