Paula Rego
Paula Rego was a peerless storyteller and figurative artist, whose uncompromising vision brought immense psychological insight to human relationships, particularly the complexities of women's experiences.
Paula Rego (1935–2022) was an artist of uncompromising vision and a peerless storyteller, bringing immense psychological insight and imaginative power to figurative art. Drawing upon her extraordinary life, politics, art history, literature, and myths, Rego's work explored human relationships, often turning established hierarchies on their heads.
Her piercing eye was trained on the codes and dynamics of power that embolden or repress her characters. Rego is especially celebrated for works addressing female agency, resolve, suffering, and survival, such as the `Dog Women` series (1994) and the `Abortion` series (1998–99), which influenced Portugal’s successful referendum on legalizing abortion.
Rego's art transcended the art world, establishing her as a feminist icon. Her native Portugal commissioned the Casa das Histórias Paula Rego, a museum dedicated to her work. Appointed the first National Gallery Associate Artist in 1989–90 and made a Dame of The British Empire in 2010, her enduring influence continues to shape younger generations.
