Giorgio Morandi
Painter, draftsman, and printmaker renowned for his intimate still life arrangements of bottles, boxes, and everyday objects, rendered with quiet intensity and a unique, meditative style.
Giorgio Morandi (1890–1964) is celebrated as one of the twentieth century's most influential artists, best known for his paintings, drawings, and etchings depicting still life arrangements of quotidian objects. Though he spent nearly his entire life in his hometown of Bologna, Italy, his work garnered international admiration from both avant-garde and traditional art circles.
Morandi's early career saw connections with Italian Futurists and a brief period with the Scuola Metafisica. However, by 1920, he had established his distinctive approach: small-scale depictions of still lifes and landscapes that were uniquely his own, detached from prevailing schools or styles.
Born and living in Bologna until his death, Morandi also served as a professor of engraving and etching at the Bologna Accademia di Belle Arti. His meticulous, contemplative practice, focused on subtle variations in light, form, and composition, continues to resonate and inspire.
