Neil Jenney stands as a maverick in twentieth-century American art, dedicated to realism as both a style and a philosophy. His practice strives to achieve a classical ideal of truth, meticulously integrating form and content while consciously moving away from what he describes as the decorative and expressive tendencies of modern abstraction.

Jenney’s early career saw him experiment widely, from hard-edge paintings and Minimalist sculpture to his "Anti-Minimal" works featuring aluminum bars and fabric masses. Facing practical challenges, including a lack of sales for his floor-based installations, he pivoted to wall-mounted pieces, recognizing the commercial necessity of the format.

This evolution led to his distinctive "Good Paintings," a shift from his earlier "Bad Painting" concept, driven by the realization that "Idealism is unavoidable." His landscape paintings, often depicting North American themes, are characterized by their highly stylized realism and the integral, artist-made frames that extend the artwork into its physical presentation.
