Marcel Duchamp
Marcel Duchamp redefined art with his readymades, challenging conventional aesthetics and paving the way for conceptual art, Dada, and Surrealism through irony and intellectual provocation.
Marcel Duchamp's reflections on the status of art and the artist's role in an industrial age profoundly shaped 20th-century art. Moving from early Impressionist and Cubist paintings, he famously devised his readymades, initiating a creative process that prioritized conceptual value and intellectual wit over traditional artistic skill.
Though he embraced a career as an international chess player, Duchamp never truly left the art world. He continued to develop ambitious projects like *Box in a Valise* and *Étant Donnés*, and curated influential exhibitions. Described as a "one-man movement," his work bridged Cubism, Dada, and Surrealism, laying groundwork for Pop, Minimalism, and Conceptual art.
Born in Normandy in 1887 into a family of artists, Duchamp received academic training before creating his distinctive Cubist style, culminating in the sensational *Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2*. He divided his life between France and the USA, becoming a naturalized American citizen and leaving a legacy of profound questioning and playful critique.
