Nathan Carter
Sculptor of wire, brass, and painted steel — ornate constellations and fascinators that balance celestial whimsy with structural precision.
Nathan Carter works in Brooklyn, building sculptures from steel, brass, stainless steel wire, and enamel paint. The pieces — titled like cosmic dispatches or New Orleans second-line invitations — read as ornate line drawings in three dimensions, hovering somewhere between fascinator, constellation chart, and communication device.
The drawings, shown alongside the sculptures in a 2024 survey at Casey Kaplan, span nearly three decades and reveal the same logic: intricate, layered, obsessively patterned. Colored pencil, gouache, and ink on canvas or paper, each one a network of forms that could be botanical, architectural, or purely invented.
He was born in Dallas, trained as a sculptor, and has spent the last two decades refining a visual language that feels both baroque and restrained. The work is precise, playful, and carries its own internal mythology.
