Max Bill
Swiss polymath who brought Bauhaus principles into concrete art, sculpture, and the foundational language of Swiss design.
Max Bill studied at the Bauhaus under Kandinsky, Klee, and Moholy-Nagy, then spent six decades translating those principles into a discipline he called Concrete Art — work built from mathematical and geometric foundations, rational in construction, sensory in effect.
The practice crossed every boundary: painting, sculpture, architecture, industrial design, graphic design, teaching. He co-founded the Ulm School of Design, defined Swiss modernism for a generation, and catalyzed Brazil's Concrete Art movement with a single 1951 retrospective in São Paulo.
He worked from Zurich and insisted that design carried social responsibility. The forms were rigorous. The reach was global.
