George Condo

George Condo paints faces that refuse to settle — multiple eyes, fractured profiles, expressions that contradict themselves within a single head. The work draws from seventeenth-century Dutch portraiture, Cubism, Surrealism, and Pop, then twists them into something entirely his own: monstrous, tender, and often both at once.

He works in New York and has been making paintings, drawings, and sculpture for more than four decades. The technique is classical, the subjects anything but. Each canvas becomes a stage for the kaleidoscopic range of human emotion — fragmented, elusive, and intentional down to the last brushstroke.

His association with Sprüth Magers dates back to 1984, when he mounted one of his first solo exhibitions at Galerie Monika Sprüth. The work has never stopped asking the same question: What's the point of each mark on the canvas?
