Don Brown

Don Brown works between sculpture and painting from a practice rooted in Norfolk. He's best known for his ongoing 'Yoko' series — figurative sculptures that attempt to animate thought itself, balancing minutely observed reality with art historical and mythic resonance.

In recent years his practice has expanded decisively into painting and drawing. The subjects — flowers, inanimate forms, scenes recorded from life and from paintings he admires — carry the same dualities that define his sculpture: specificity and universalism, the impermanent and the eternal.

Of the painting he has said: 'I'm wrestling with the idea of trying to make an image and fix it, while the thing itself is changing.' The work is patient, attentive, and uncommonly self-aware.
