Daniel Sinsel

Daniel Sinsel’s paintings and sculptures combine various materials and styles to explore themes of space, volume, and illusion. His meticulously layered oil paintings are marked by trompe l'oeil and technical virtuosity, delving into shape, objecthood, and the erotics of space. Each work self-reflexively engages with art history, encompassing abstract materiality, classical motifs, and still life.

Sinsel's practice deploys a slowly expanding repertoire of symbolic objects, including glass, cherry stones, nutshells, silk, and ribbon. These elements reveal the covert language of queer desire and invest objects with a sensory, fetishistic presence, often referring to the body in its absence through incongruous forms or close material attention.

Working intuitively, Sinsel adds and removes elements throughout the painting process, rather than adhering to a premeditated plan. His assemblages, featuring raw, tactile elements like hazelnut shells and garnets, articulate a metaphysical boundary between representation and reality, imbuing their liminal spaces with understated tension and psychological charge.
