Suzan Frecon
Suzan Frecon creates abstract oil paintings and works on paper that demand sustained attention, inviting viewers to experience rather than merely observe their intricate compositions.
Suzan Frecon is known for abstract oil paintings and works on paper that, in her own words, “speak for themselves.” Her practice emphasizes a prolonged engagement, encouraging viewers to “experience” the paintings rather than simply look at them, a process cultivated over long stretches of creation.
Frecon's compositions are built on a foundational structure of asymmetrically balanced forms, meticulously arranged in precise spatial and proportional relationships. She employs measurements to achieve what she describes as an “unbalanced equilibrium,” manipulating pigments and oils to create tactile color and contrasting matte and shiny surfaces that shift between light and dark, figure and ground.
Born in Mexico, Pennsylvania, Frecon studied at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris before exhibiting widely in the United States and internationally. Her work has been featured in major solo exhibitions at The Menil Collection and the Kunstmuseum Bern, and she is a recipient of the Artists’ Legacy Foundation Artist Award and an inductee into the American Academy of Arts and Letters.
