Mark Tansey
Mark Tansey creates meticulously detailed, monochromatic paintings that explore the complexities of perception, meaning, and subjectivity through layers of historical, philosophical, and literary references.
Mark Tansey crafts meticulously detailed, monochromatic paintings that delve into the complexities of perception, meaning, and subjectivity. He works within the traditions of figurative and landscape painting, weaving in expansive knowledge of history, philosophy, and literature. His precise technique and distortions of perspective challenge how viewers interpret an image.
Raised in California by an art historian, Tansey developed a vast visual lexicon early on. After studying at the Art Center College of Design and Hunter College, he refined his signature subtractive painting method. This involves priming the canvas, blocking out forms with color, then meticulously removing layers to achieve a near-photographic precision and monochromatic effect.
Tansey’s deliberate process yields approximately one painting every two years, each meticulously constructed from sketches and collages. His oeuvre is characterized by its monochromatic palette, notably the ultramarine blue introduced in 2004. These works often feature sublime landscapes, intricate figures, and disorienting reflections, rendering complex scenes with schematic exactitude that invites close, sustained examination.
