Mamma Andersson
Painter of atmospheric, psychologically layered scenes drawn from archival photographs, film, and the sparse topography of northern Sweden.
Mamma Andersson paints from Stockholm, working in oil, acrylic, and charcoal on canvas, panel, and linen. Her compositions — textured brushstrokes beside loose washes, stark graphic lines cutting through evocative color — build scenes that feel like memory half-recalled: mountainous backdrops, wooden cabins, theater interiors, figures caught mid-gesture in uncertain light.
The work draws on archival photographs, film stills, period interiors, and the northern Swedish landscape where she grew up. But rather than anchoring to place or time, the paintings collapse past, present, and future into a single psychological atmosphere.
She studied at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm and has exhibited internationally for over two decades. Her sixth solo show with David Zwirner opens in Paris in 2026; recent institutional presentations include the He Art Museum in China and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark.
