Jules de Balincourt
Painter of radiant, globally minded canvases tracking the social and political currents of contemporary life.
Jules de Balincourt paints between Brooklyn and the Costa Rican coast, building canvases that read like field notes from a borderless world. The work — crowds, boats, migrations, storms — is rendered in saturated color and unsteady perspective, tracking the drift of people and power across an increasingly fluid map.
He studied at California College of Arts and Crafts and Hunter College, founded the Brooklyn community space Starr Space, and has since shown at the Mori Art Museum, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, and the Centro de Arte Contemporáneo in Málaga. The paintings have traveled further than most artists do.
His work sits in collections at the Brooklyn Museum, LACMA, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and elsewhere. The subjects change. The attention doesn't.
