Diana Thater

Since the early 1990s, Los Angeles-based artist Diana Thater has continually pushed the boundaries of time-based media and installation art. Her practice, which incorporates film, video, light, and sound, critically examines the structures of mediated reality while exploring the relationship between the natural and man-made worlds.

Thater draws on a diverse range of sources, from literature and animal behavior sciences to mathematics and chess, to inform her evocative works. These installations directly engage their surroundings, fostering an intricate dialogue between time and space within the viewer's experience.

Her comprehensive mid-career survey, *The Sympathetic Imagination*, was organized by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 2015, traveling to the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. Thater's work has been exhibited internationally at institutions including the Guggenheim Bilbao, Dia Center for the Arts, and Kunsthaus Graz.
