Charles Gaines
Conceptual artist building systems that interrogate the boundary between objective formula and subjective experience.
Charles Gaines works from Los Angeles, building art from formulas, grids, and generative systems that map the distance between the empirical and the felt. His practice began with painting in the 1960s, then pivoted sharply toward conceptualism in the early 1970s — a shift he calls 'the awakening' — and hasn't looked back.
The work uses numbers, trees, faces, and text as raw material. Each series follows a set of rules: mathematical progressions, photographic translations, overlaid grids. The systems are rigorous, but the results resist easy resolution. Identity, race, and representation move through the work without announcement.
He taught at CalArts for over three decades, established a fellowship for Black M.F.A. students, and continues to write on contemporary art. His collected writings are forthcoming from Hauser & Wirth Publishers in 2027. Recent public commissions include 'The American Manifest' for Creative Time and 'Hanging Tree' at the Equal Justice Initiative's Freedom Monument Sculpture Park in Montgomery.
