Anna Maria Maiolino explores the liminal spaces of human existence through a multidisciplinary practice spanning sculpture, installation, drawing, and performance, deeply informed by migration and identity.

Anna Maria Maiolino, born in Italy and now a pivotal figure in Brazilian art, explores the interplay of creation and destruction, subjectivity, and self. Her expansive practice encompasses drawing, printmaking, poetry, film, performance, installation, and sculpture, all unified by a relentless inquiry into identity. Her formative migration from post-war Italy to politically unstable South America, and her linguistic shift, deeply inform her work.

Maiolino's early experiments in the 1960s, shadowed by military repression, aligned her with Brazil's New Figuration and New Objectivity movements. Alongside peers like Lygia Pape and Hélio Oiticica, she radically reconfigured the art object, challenging constructivist traditions and forging a new vision for Brazilian art.

Since the 1980s, Maiolino has focused on malleable materials, allowing unconscious gestures and daily rituals to leave their imprint. Her mark-making, often based on repetitive actions, transforms raw matter into forms that evoke basic bodily functions. This work liberates abstraction from puritanical Minimalism, returning it to the service of the active, desiring body in search of a new language for human experience.
