Alain Jacquet
Alain Jacquet explored the mechanics of image reproduction, blending Pop Art sensibilities with a rigorous analysis of representation, fragmentation, and appropriation.
Alain Jacquet emerged as a pivotal figure during the mid-20th century boom in image reproduction techniques, tirelessly analyzing how representation shapes the viewer’s gaze. His expansive oeuvre spanned from early abstract canvases to mechanically generated paintings, utilizing silkscreen printing and computer techniques to continuously experiment with form and media.
Guided by principles of ingenuity, Jacquet delved into the interplay between abstraction and figuration, the "latent image" in collective memory, and the appropriation of popular culture alongside iconic museum works. He investigated the "explosion" of the unique image through fragmentation and multiplication, often infusing his work with subtle ambiguity and irony.
Jacquet engaged with multiple currents of his era, from his dialogue with American Pop artists to his Mec'Art period and series like Braille and Visions de la Terre, which foreshadowed appropriationist art. As the sole French artist in Harald Szeemann’s seminal "When Attitudes Become Form" in 1969, his work was exhibited internationally at Documenta, the Venice Biennale, and the Sao Paulo Biennales.
